When I first got to St. John the Divine (
Phoenix Rising,
On Phoenix Wings,
The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine), the only chairs set out were up in the front and on the altar. Otherwise, the floor was bare (aside from the two carved pews that stand in the back of the church).

And then, presumably in anticipation of the annual
Christmas Concert and the
Cathedral Winter Solstice Celebration, more chairs began to roll in on dollies and a crew began to set them out in precise rows on either side of the central aisle.

There was a beauty to the work as the team rolled dollies in with chairs atop, set them out, and then rolled the empty dollies out. They were a quiet team with the only sound breaking the vast silence of the Cathedral being a slight clatter here and there as a chair was lifted from a dollie. Or maybe a whisper between two crew members as they worked to place the chairs in rows.

I am a little obsessed with these simple wooden chairs. They remind me of school chairs with their slatted backs and solid seats on sturdy metal frames. I failed to sit in one and will have to rectify that on my next visit. I did, however, sit in both of the tall wooden pews at the back of the church. A lot of history in them there pews. A lot of history in this here cathedral.
